A vacation home with a private pool: wonderful! But did you know that not every pool is maintained the same way? Some use chlorine, others use salt. At CAP Holiday Rentals, we’ve noticed that vacationers are sometimes a bit hesitant about saltwater pools. There’s absolutely no need to be, because a saltwater pool actually has quite a few advantages!
What exactly is the difference between a saltwater pool and a chlorinated pool? We'd be happy to explain.
When you think of a saltwater pool, you might immediately think of the ocean: salty water, a strong salty taste, and stinging eyes. Fortunately, nothing could be further from the truth!
In fact, a saltwater pool contains about ten times less salt than seawater. So you can hardly taste the salt.
Through a salt electrolysis system, the salt is converted into chlorine, which keeps the water clean and hygienic. A saltwater pool is therefore not entirely chlorine-free, but the way the chlorine is produced is different.
Of course, a traditional chlorine pool is also an excellent choice!
The difference is that chlorine is added directly to the water, for example, using tablets or an automatic dosing system.
Chlorine is particularly effective at keeping pool water clean. However, if the water balance is off, it can cause a strong pool odor, stinging eyes, or dry skin.
Why are more and more vacation home owners choosing saltwater pools?
Gentler on the skin: many swimmers find saltwater more pleasant and less drying.
Less pronounced chlorine odor: the water often has a less strong chlorine smell.
Gentle on the eyes: some swimmers experience less irritation.
Hardly any salty taste: you don’t feel at all like you’re swimming in the ocean.
Automatic disinfection: the system gradually produces chlorine.
Are there any downsides? Just like with a traditional chlorinated pool, skin or eye irritation can occur if the water balance isn’t optimal. The system also requires technical maintenance, but as a vacationer, you generally don’t have to worry about that.
Salt or chlorine? Don't let that determine your choice! Both types of pools are perfect for a wonderful vacation. The most important thing is that the pool is well maintained.
