Nestled between Tuscany and Campagnia, along the Tyrrhenian Sea, lies Lazio. A region that is characterized by volcanic lakes, mountains, vineyards and olive trees. Rome, with its immense cultural patrimony, dominates the region here. The Vatican City, the smallest state in the world, is a world heritage that you just can’t skip.
The region has a lot of Etruscan influences. To admire the remains of this civilization, the most important places are Cerveteri, Viterbo, Tuscania and Tarquina. The showpiece of Cerveteri is Necropoli, an Etruscan city of the dead. In Tarquina you will find the museum that gives the best overview of this civilization, the Museo Nazionale Taruinese.
Tuscania and especially Viterbo are very cozy towns. The inhabitants are proud of their origin and radiate that.
Many smaller villages will charm you, such as Civita di Bagnoregio, Ninfa and Castel di Tora. Stroll past the old houses, discover the narrow alleys and fully absorb the Italian atmosphere.
Lazio also has some other assets, like Lake Bolsena, Albano and Bracciano, where you can swim and sail. The thermal springs around Fiuggi, Viterbo and Tivoli are a must and the beautiful beaches between Gaeta and Sabaudia cannot be ignored.
