The village Baux de Provence is a unique place, located in the Bouches-du-Rhône and perched on a mountaintop, with absolutely fabulous views all around.
The highest point of this village is at around 300m above sea-level, and its medieval ruins will keep you charmed throughout your day there.
The castle is one of Europe’s last remaining examples of a feudal castle,
and the St Vincent church is partly built right into the rock.
The drive there is already impressive, along winding roads amidst the limestone crests. You might even spot an eagle or a falcon on the way.
Les Baux de Provence is classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France – Most Beautiful Villages in France – and rumour has it that it is possibly one of the most beautiful villages in the classification.
Just to give you a better idea, there are about 450 local inhabitants and the village receives about 1.5 million tourists per year!
Rent a holiday house with a swimming pool in the vicinity and enjoy a timeless journey.
The Chateau:
The ruins of this medieval castle overlook the entire village, offering impressive views. You will get a better glimpse of medieval life before going back for a glass of wine by your private swimming pool.
The Church:
The Saint Vincent church was built over two hundred years, starting all the way back in the 12th Century. It is a surprising example of a troglodyte church built in part straight into the
rock, and some of its tinted windows were offered by Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
Something to enjoy discussing once you are back in your rented holiday house with a swimming pool.
The Santon Museum:
Santons are small, handpainted terracotta figurines that represent every possible person in a village, fom the baker to the doctor, and special santons are made for Nativity. There is a special museum in Baux-de-Provence dedicated to these santons, called Le Musée des Santons.
The Quarry of Lights:
Les Carrières des Lumières is a spectacular show of music and lights at the very heart of the quarries. Large reproductions of the most famous paintings are projected onto the natural walls of this incredible place. A fantastic experience for art lovers.
Baux-de-Provence is at the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles, a natural regional park with everything you need for an adventurous day in nature, from petting zoos to rope-climbing, the children will love it! And maybe you will too!
And of course, you’re in Provence! Sit at a terrace and enjoy the sunny weather, the laid-back lifestyle, good food and delicious wines.
